Adoption: Facts

There are about 1200 Korean adoptees living in Switzerland. Worldwide, some 132'000 to 200'000 persons from Korea have been given up for adoption.

SEARCHING FOR BIRTHPARENTS:

Many of our members – some also with DONGARI's help – have found their birthparents or relatives in Korea and have since visited their motherland. However, not every member is interested in searching for their birth parents.

A copy of the adoption papers is essential for the search for one's Korean relatives. If these are missing, one can try to obtain a copy from the local adoption agency: Most of us here in Switzerland were placed by Terre des Hommes.

One important detail, for instance, is the Dossier Number. This will be useful in finding out from the adoption agencies in Korea whether more information is available.

Alternatively, the Korean mass media (daily newspapers, TV (e.g. KBS) can also be helpful. Some TV stations have shows featuring Korean adoptees who are searching for their relatives.
